Neil originally started in product design but got more into drawing the products than designing them!
After a period down south in manufacturing industry and product design consultancy, Neil was encouraged by the PYSBT to move away from the technical side and go freelance in order to develop his graphic art, illustration, cartoon and caricature art skills.
This has led to an interesting and exciting journey which has allowed him to develop his own style working as an illustrator, designer and caricaturist for a range of organisations large and small.
Clients include British Petroleum, Halifax IF Bank, Tunnocks, Tennents, HistoricScotland, Alloway 1759 Festival, Glenmorangie Whisky, The Scottish Maritime Museum, Scottish Brewers, Ayrshire Tourism, Trades House Glasgow, Scottish Power,
Loch Lomond Golf Club, Scottish Consumer Council and AMG Group (Vango).
Influences include the art featuring in comics such as 2000AD by artists such as Simon Bisley, record cover art including the futuristic concept art of Stanley Matthews, Roger Dean and Chris Foss and closer to home the inspirational caricature
art of Malky McCormack. Neil uses propelling pencils, fibre tips, coloured pencils, acrylics, chalk and pantone/magic markers.
He still draws by hand but increasingly the drawings tend to be scanned and coloured on his mac using a wacom tablet.
For live caricature events he uses the Pentel Sign Pen and the humble Berol fine and broad pens.
